The Sport and Rights Alliance Calls on European Olympic Committees to Act and urge the Azerbaijani government to release unjustly imprisoned journalists and activists.
“The European Olympic Committees are in a unique position to raise these pressing human rights concerns (…)” said Eduard Nazarski, Amnesty International Netherlands Director. “(…) while [the country is] hosting an event that, according to the Olympic Charter, should stand for human dignity and sport at the heart of the harmonious development of society.”
The Sport and Rights Alliance is a recently formed coalition of which Terre des Hommes is part. The alliance is seeking to ensure that host countries of Mega Sporting Events respect human rights, the environment, and anti-corruption requirements at all stages of the process—from bidding through construction and preparations to host events as well as during events themselves.
Children WIN asks the FIFA, the International Olympic Committee and host governments to take the interests of all children into consideration when organizing and realizing Mega Sporting Events.
As the child rights focused organization of the Alliance, Terre Des Hommes highlights and voices its concern on how detention of parents makes them particularly vulnerable. The effects on children are sometimes indirect, when their close environment is endangered, their lives are affected – as stated by Daniel Rhind, from the Brunel University London.
